In the absence of comprehensive test panels for skill genes, various tests measuring athletic skills have been used to assess the skill level of athletes.

However, in the 21st century, advancements in technology have enhanced testing capabilities. It is now possible to obtain comparable data on athletes through tests that measure visual perception and reaction. The Vizual Edge test can be used to assess the ability to perceive, for instance, game events, field movement, and player movement. This test also allows for easy, individualized skill development at home.
